The smallest Balkan nation is worth visiting for each meter of its size.
In the very southwest of the country lies the Bay of Kotor, celebrated as the most beautiful bay in the Adriatic Sea. The Bay is a fjord-like channel with mountains hovering over it. At the end of it, lies the UNESCO-protected medieval town of Kotor. Fortified by walls, the town consists of stone-paved streets and squares with cafes and Byzantine-style churches. Consider visiting in February, during the annual Carnival, and do not miss to try local dessert Kotorska krempita.
Two hours driving into the mighty Dinnaroid mountains after which Montenegro got its name, you will find Ostrog Monastery. This Orthodox Christian temple was originally carved into the mountains in the year 859, where the 17th century monastery stands today. This historic wonder attracts over 100 000 tourists each year, some drawn by the magnificent frescoes and architecture, others searching for miraculous healing.

Did you know about the Montenegrin Oscar ?
Short animation “The Substitute” (Surogat) was the first non-American movie to win the prestigious Oscar Award in 1961. The movie was made by Dušan Vukotić and produced by Zagreb Film.
On a beach at the seaside, a tourist is blowing up and creating an entire camp out of plastic. In this colourful inflatable environment there is a plastic surrogate for everything, even feelings. The beach sees the birth of a thrilling love, jealousy and revenge, and finally tragedy. Everything deflated and came down with the appearance of one small realistic nail.
The premise of the film was simple, but the critique of the consumerist world in the rapidly industrialising and conformist society pertinent. Today, it reminds us of the ingeniosity of the Yugoslav animation and the artistic ability to analyse and universalise the human experience.

Balkan region is a cross-road of cultures. Many cultures inhabit it, and many more used to inhabit it. Their coexistence, passing and staying is remembered through the multitude of words of various origin. Whatever languages you might speak, it will help you learn Serbo-Croatian.
